MIRACLES SURROUND US

March 4, 2003, could have been the blackest day in the life of Lew Watanabe,

or the sign of a new beginning. It all depends on how you look at it and who

is doing the looking. Lew and Joyce will tell you that it was the beginning of

a series of miracles as they look back over the past ten months.

On March 4, it didn't look as though Lew would make it. Today, he does more

and more things for himself. Each day, he gains more strength, greater mobility

and flexibility. That progress has not come without enormous effort on the

part of Lew, Joyce, doctors, nurses, therapists and a host of angel volunteers.

The progress made with the love, prayers and devotion of family, friends and

strangers have been a miracle.

Donations of time and talent, materials, food, cash have allowed Lew and

Joyce to focus on his daily exercise and have removed some of the worry about

expenses. The Lew Watanabe Benevolent Trust has purchased a van to increase Lew's

mobility and paid utility bills and other cost-of-living expenses. Generosity

from the community of Sierra Madre and Friends of Lew is another miracle.

The trust continues to be administered by Verland Kelly. Contributions may

be mailed to the Lew Watanabe Trust Fund, 80 West Sierra Madre Boulevard,

Sierra Madre, CA 91024. Yes, miracles do surround us every day, in every place. It

just depends on who is doing the looking. Look around as you head into a new

year. It may just amaze you as you encounter your next miracle.
